Emergency Pet Travel Rules Announced For Ukrainian Refugees
Environment Minister Edwin Poots has announced that refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine can enter Northern Ireland with their pets without having to meet all pet travel rules.
Minister Poots said: "The Ukrainian people are facing a horrendous situation with many forced to flee their homes and seek safety elsewhere. We have witnessed them carrying their treasured possessions, including their cherished pets, as they flee the war and their homes.
"It is a traumatic experience without the added bureaucracy of travel documents and proof of vaccination for your cat or dog, so I am pleased to announce that they can enter Northern Ireland using an emergency licence.
"We have strong biosecurity measures in place to protect the public and other animals from diseases which can be brought to Northern Ireland by animals from overseas. To protect these measures alternative arrangements have been put in place.
"This will include meeting the costs of quarantine for pets and the necessary health treatments such as tapeworm or rabies vaccinations to ensure we protect our long held rabies-free status and ensure pets are returned to their owners as quickly as possible."

Police Rescue Dog In Co Armagh
Police have reunited a dog with his owners after they rescued him in Co Armagh. Flufie was rescued from a ditch in the area and took him to the vet. He injured one of his back legs and the vet has put him on a drip. Flufie was microchipped, however his details were not updated. The owner was located and reunited with Flufie.

A disused store in Newtownabbey, County Antrim, has been destroyed in a fire. The blaze in the former Pet World store in Newtownabbey retail park was tackled by over 20 firefighters.

Firefighters 'taken aback' by beheaded pet rabbits
Firefighters in Co Antrim have expressed their disgust after finding the remains of two beheaded pet rabbits when they were called to deal with a burning car. The rabbits were stolen from hutches at a house in Portrush on Tuesday morning. Fire crews were initially called to the house after a fire was reported at the back of the home.

New Legislation Criminalises Pet Abduction
New legislation criminalising the abduction of cats and dogs has been introduced by DAERA Minister, Andrew Muir. The Pet Abduction Act 2024 will come into force in Northern Ireland on 24 August 2024. This Act creates specific offences for the abduction of cats and dogs to recognise that they are not mere property but sentient beings.

As Christmas approaches, the Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has partnered with Northern Ireland animal welfare charity, the Ulster Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (USPCA) to appeal to the public to "think very carefully before choosing a pet as a present".
