Over 4,000 Properties Remain Without Power

Over 4,000 homes remain without power as Storm Franklin continues to move across Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) said that engineers are working to reconnect homes and businesses but that conditions remain challenging. The energy provider said that at its height, some 10,000 properties lost power during the early hours of Monday morning.

According to the Met Office, the worst of Storm Franklin has passed and winds would continue to ease throughout the day.

Kilroot Must Remain Operational Over Winter – UUP
The Ulster Unionist Party has called for Kilroot coal-powered power station to remain open and operational over the winter to avoid power cuts. The party's infrastructure spokesperson, John Stewart, made the call following the news that new gas turbines, installed to replace coal, will not be commissioned on time.

The Economy Minister Gordon Lyons has visited Kilroot Power Station to hear about plans to enhance security of supply and produce electricity in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. Deadline Day To Restore Power Sharing In NI
Political parties have until 4pm today, 29 June, to restore power sharing in Northern Ireland. Discussions have been ongoing to resolve outstanding issues to form an Executive. However, Sinn Fein said the DUP have not moved to "address the issues of rights, equality and respect". MLA John O'Dowd said: "The DUP knows what needs to be done.
