Ulster Cancer Foundation offers smoking advice
The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) has launched a pilot scheme this week to help young people give up smoking in partnership with Brook Clinic in Belfast.
The UCF have been providing support and advice to people trying to stop smoking for over 25 years and will be extending this support to young people via a specially trained Ulster Cancer Foundation counsellor who will be based at Brook Clinic one evening a week and will offer advice and guidance on giving up smoking in an informal friendly manner.
Anne Devlin, Health Promotion Officer, Ulster Cancer Foundation said: “The aim of this project is to offer young people information about stopping smoking in a non-judgemental and informal way, in a context where they will feel comfortable.
"We will also be offering health advice relating to giving up smoking. For example young female smokers who may be taking the contraceptive pill could be advised on the short and long term health benefits of stopping smoking, whilst young men could be encouraged to consider stopping from the point of view of general and sexual health.”
Mary Crawford of Brook Clinic added: “We welcome working with UCF on this pilot. Brook works with young people to help them make informed choices around their sexual health and is happy to provide information and support to assist young people to reduce or stop their smoking.”
Brook has nearly 40 years experience of providing free and confidential sexual health advice to young people up to 19, and the smoking cessation advice will be offered to young people returning to Brook for second appointments.
The pilot scheme will last for ten weeks.
