First Minister Paul Givan Expected To Announce Resignation

The First Minister Paul Givan is planning to resign his position, as part of the DUPs "protest against the Protocol".

According to reports, it is not clear when Mr Givan will make the announcement or when his resignation will take effect – he might resign with immediate effect at tomorrow's Executive meeting, or defer it until next week, when the Executive is due to make a decision on the remaining Covid restrictions.

Mr Givan's resignation would stall the power of the Executive as it would result in deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill also losing her job.

The Executive can only operate when chaired by the First and deputy First Ministers.

The resignation of Mr Givan would mean that the Executive would continue to meet but would not be able to take any action.
