School awarded controlled Irish-medium status
A north Belfast school has been awarded controlled Irish-medium status, the government announced today.
Bunscoil Mhic Reachtain was first established as an independent Irish-medium Primary School in 1999, and initially occupied part of the premises used by St Patrick’s PS, North Queen Street.
At present, the school is in temporary mobile accommodation at the 147 Trust site on the Antrim Road.
In approving the proposal, Education Minister, Barry Gardiner said: "I am delighted to approve this proposal in response to the request of the school authorities.
“This is the first time that an Irish-medium school has come under the control of an Education and Library Board. I believe this to be an important step, the beginning of an exciting new partnership within the education sector and to the benefit of all concerned.
“I wish the school every success for the future.”
The school was awarded grant-aided status in June 2002, and became eligible for recurrent funding from September 2002. The school has a current enrolment of 47 pupils.
