New £14m Funding Package Announced To Develop Environment Projects

Minister for the Environment Edwin Poots has announced a new £14 million funding package to assist farmers develop new environment projects.

Under the fifth round of DAERA's Environmental Farming Scheme (EFS), successful applicants can expect to receive their online offer of an agreement in the next couple of weeks.

Minister Poots said: "The Environmental Farming Scheme is an important but voluntary scheme which supports farmers to undertake measures which help climate change mitigation, maintain biodiversity and improve water quality through a range of options.

"It is funded under the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme and this £14million scheme is on top of the £63million already committed through EFS to date.

"We are confident that most farmers who applied for EFS Wider Tranche 5, and provided the required information, can expect to receive their offers before the Christmas holidays. They will then have 21 days to confirm their acceptance of the five year agreement. The rest will be released in January 2022.

"If you received an agreement offer please log in to DAERA Online Services using your Government Gateway ID and password before the deadline given in the letter to view and accept your agreement. Agreements can only be accepted online," Minister Poots added.

£6m Allocated To Environmental Farming Scheme
Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots has announced the allocation of £6 million for the Environmental Farming Scheme (EFS). Making the announcement, Minister Poots said: "I am delighted to confirm that we have processed 92% of all EFS Wider and Higher 2021 claims and where a payment is due to these businesses they have been made.

DAERA Pays Out Almost £9m To EFS Agreement Holders
Payments totalling £8.96 million has been paid out to Environmental Farming Scheme (EFS) agreement holders, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has announced. Payment for claims made in 2022 commenced on Monday, 17 April, with over 90% of claims paid on that day.

National Parks: Attwood Vs The Ulster Farmers Union
The Ulster Farmers Union have come out against plans for national parks in Northern Ireland. It follows a meeting they had with Stormont's environment minister Alex Attwood earlier this week where they discussed his department's plans to set up two national parks in either the Cauesway Coast, the Fermangh Lakelands or the Mourne Mountains.
