Derry Council back play facility redevelopment

Derry City Council has announced plans for the redevelopment of a major play area in the city.

Working in partnership with Newbuildings Community Association and the Rural Development Council (RDC), the Council has helped secure funds for the facilities in Newbuildings.

Following an extensive and detailed consultation process, which was carried out last year with local residents and stakeholders in the Primity Crescent Area, the Association has secured £58,000 in funding from the Rural Development Council (under the EU Building Sustainable Prosperity Programme) and £30,000 has been earmarked for the project from Derry City Council. An additional £5,000 is to be provided by Desmonds towards the initiative.

The Mayor, Councillor Shaun Gallagher gave his backing to the project. "This is a great initiative that will benefit the entire community in Newbuildings," he said. "Play areas are a vital asset for each locality and have an important role in community development and community relations. Once completed, the new play area will be a focal point for the people of Primity crescent/Newbuildings."

The RDC has been working closely with the Association for more than 18 months during which time a Friends group was established and a design and costings for the project were finalised with help from Derry City Council.

Newbuildings' Community Centre Manager Allison Wallace, extended her thanks to Council, RDC and Desmonds for the important role they played in funding for the project.

"We believe this project will be of great benefit to the local community and we are delighted that funding has been secured," she said.
