DRD to address disabled transport system
The Government has called on the public to help it improve the accessibility of the local transport system for older people and people with disabilities.
The Department for Regional Development (DRD) today revealed that a special project team is working on a strategy to address such needs.
Ian Humes, Project Manager for the Accessible Transport Strategy, said: "Many people in Northern Ireland are unable to make full use of the transport system because of the barriers they face. These can be physical barriers that are present in the pedestrian environment or due to the design of vehicles. But they can also stem from issues such as society’s and individuals’ attitudes, the design of services and the way information is provided.
"In keeping with our commitment to make transport accessible, we are keen to examine all possible means of improving access."
As a first step in the process, DRD published an ‘Issues Paper’ in February which set out the proposed scope, objectives and consultation arrangements for the development of the Strategy. The paper was distributed widely, with the help of Disability Action and Age Concern. The public were encouraged to comment and register their interest in receiving further information about the Strategy as it develops.
Commenting on the consultation responses, Ian Humes said: "I’m very pleased with the response to the Issues Paper but I know many people will prefer to voice their views at meetings rather than in writing and DRD will be working with voluntary organisations to inform local groups."
DRD is holding a meeting in Enniskillen, at the Clinton Centre, Queen Elizabeth Street at 7pm on 21st April, to learn about access problems experienced by older people and people with disabilities and their ideas for making things better.
In order to ensure that the right communication support and information is available in the appropriate formats, the public is asked to reserve their place by telephoning Rural Lift on 028 6638 6427 or textphone DRD on 028 90540642.
The DRD will be working with local community transport organisations to provide accessible transport for people who may have difficulties getting to and from the meeting.
