Man Arrested In Connection With Death Of A 2-Year-Old Child

A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a two-year-old girl.

Northern Ireland Ambulance Service attended an address in Park Avenue in Dungannon on Friday 06 August, where they took the child to hospital. The child died in hospital a short time later.

Detectives from the PSNI's Major Investigation Team are investigating the circumstances of the child's death.

Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell said: "The child was admitted to hospital after Northern Ireland Ambulance Service attended an address in Park Avenue in Dungannon. The child later died in hospital.

"As part of our investigation, we have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of murder, and he remains in custody this morning.

"A post mortem will be conducted to establish the cause of the child's death.

"Our thoughts are with the child's family, which is being supported by Family Liaison Officers.

"We will update you in due course but, at this time, there are no further details."

Police in Ballymena are appealing to the public for help in locating a missing man. Alastair McIlroy, 63, was last seen in the Leighinmohr Avenue area of the town on Saturday, 07 December. He is described as 6ft 3in tall with short grey hair and a distinctive ear piercing on his left ear.

Three Police Officers Injured In Belfast Incident
A 35-year-old man has been arrested following an incident in which three police officers were assaulted in the early hours of this morning, Friday 13 December. The incident occurred around 12:20 AM on Dublin Road. When officers attempted to speak to the driver of a suspicious vehicle, he assaulted them and drove off a short distance.

Teenager Road Victim Named
The grim death toll on NI roads has risen again with news that an 18-year-old woman has passed away in hospital after a weekend car crash in Co Fermanagh. She was named this morning as Shelley Sturgeon from Menapian Way in Enniskillen.

More Work Needed To Tackle Child Poverty
According to recent research more needs to be done to get children in Northern Ireland out of Poverty, with the British Government being blamed for the elimination target slipping. The charity Barnardos has revealed that two areas in Northern Ireland have two of the highest rates of child poverty in the UK.
