Beach And Sea Safety Highlighted In PSNI Campaign

As restrictions continue to ease across Northern Ireland the PSNI have launched a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of safety at beaches and in the sea.

With NI full of beautiful beaches and beauty spots which are perfect for families and groups of friends to enjoy over the summer months, Superintendent Gordon McCalmont from the Crime Prevention and Early Intervention Branch said: "We know that people are out and about, enjoying the good weather and gathering at beauty spots.

"We want everyone to enjoy themselves and have a good time but would also urge the public to be mindful and respectful of local residents in the areas they are travelling to.

"We expect our beaches and beauty spots to be very busy over the coming weeks and will be responding to any issues of concern to ensure that everyone can enjoy themselves safely.

"We will have a police presence at beauty spots where necessary so that everyone can enjoy a positive, safe experience and to help ensure this, we encourage parents to check where their children are and what time they are expected back.

"When out and about it's always a good idea to make sure your phone is fully charged and when you are leaving your home or car, safely secure any valuables out of sight.

"If you are using public transport to reach your destination over the coming weeks, please be respectful of those around you," added Superintendent McCalmont.

Translink are also advising day trippers and holiday makers to travel safely this summer.

Translink's General Manager, Bus Service Operations, David Curry said: "With the gradual removal of restrictions, we know more people are travelling again to reconnect with family, friends and for special days out.

"We continue to ensure our vehicles receive enhanced cleaning, provide hand sanitisers in our stations and encourage customers to use pre-paid tickets or contactless payments to minimise interaction and maintain high safety standards. We would also remind everyone travelling with us, to wear a face covering (unless exempt).

"We closely monitor passenger numbers on all services and provide additional capacity where possible. However, we advise that when services are busy, it may be necessary to wait for the next service in order to maintain social distancing."
