Edwin Poots To Stand For DUP Leadership

Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots is to stand for leadership of the DUP.

The current leader, Arlene Foster, announced she is to step down as the party leader at the end of May and First Minister at the end of June.

In a video posted on Twitter, Mr Poots said: "I am a proud Northern Ireland man, I love its people and its place, and it faces many challenging times, it’s with that in mind, I'm putting my name forward for the leadership for the Democratic Unionist Party.

"I look forward to the engagement and the debate with colleagues and the wider public in this contest.

|Northern Ireland is a place that has had many great things over this last hundred years, I wish to see us rebuild, revitalise, reinvigorate and revive for the next hundred."

Other names believed to be in the running include MPs Gavin Robinson and Jeffrey Donaldson.

Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) officers are to meet today, 04 May, to discuss the date of its leadership election, according to reports. Stormont Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots and MP Sir Jeffrey Donaldson have put themselves forward to succeed Arlene Foster.

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson and Edwin Poots are to stand as candidates for the DUP leadership. Gregory Campbell, Paula Bradley and Paul Frew are the candidates for deputy leader, the party chairman Lord Morrow said in a statement.

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson Only Candidate For DUP Leadership
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson will stand uncontested for the Leadership of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). Sir Jeffrey will stand for the second time after losing out to Edwin Poots by two votes just over three weeks ago. Mr Poots resigned as leader last week after just 21 days in the role following internal party revolt.

Edwin Poots Resigns DUP Leadership
Edwin Poots has resigned as leader of the DUP after just 21 days in office, following what has been described as an "internal party revolt". According to reports, an urgent party meeting was held on Thursday evening after Mr Poots had proceeded with the nomination of Paul Girvan as First Minister, despite significant opposition from his own party.
