Home Heating Oil Users Urged To Check Tank Safety
Households using home heating oil are being urged to check that their tank is in a good state of repair before getting heating oil delivered.
Highlighting the potential issues, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) said that plastic oil tanks can provide safe and sound storage for home heating oil. With the reduction in oil prices, people have been storing more oil than normal but owners may not be aware that these tanks have a finite lifespan.
As tanks get older, there is a risk of leaks from tanks and associated pipework and the danger these pose to the environment and wildlife must not be underestimated.
Kevin McGrady, Emergency Pollution Officer with NIEA said: "The NIEA promotes responsible storage of oil through the 'Tank Safe' campaign which sets out some simple steps to ensure both secure storage and protection for the environment from spillages.
"As home owners, we are responsible for the oil that we store and we have to keep in mind that it is a hazardous substance with pollution from spillages of oil being very damaging to the environment, and to the aquatic environment in particular. The 'clean-up' costs of an oil spillage can be very high, even into tens of thousands, and these costs are not always covered by household insurance policies.
"To find out more about checking your oil tank or even dealing with a spillage, check out the following pages on the NI Direct website; 'Check your oil tank' and 'Oil spills at home'."
Householders can take simple steps to prevent leaks or spills. These include:
• Regular visual inspection of your oil tanks.
• Annual servicing of oil tanks and associated related ancillary equipment by accredited professionals.
"If you are unfortunate enough to have an oil spillage, please follow the advice on NI Direct and let us know as soon as possible by phoning the NIEA Incident Hotline on 0800 807060, as early reporting will help us to take action to minimise the impact on the environment."

A man is being treated for shock following a fire at a house in Co Antrim. The blaze started shortly before noon today, 30 June, at a bungalow in Crumlin. The fire spread to a nearby oil tank and a number of residents have been evacuated from their homes.

Oil tank fire damages homes
A fire has caused damage to a number of properties in north Belfast. It is understood that the fire spread from an oil tank at the rear of a house in Alliance Avenue at around 7am today. The fuel is understood to have flowed from the backyard and then spread to another property in Stratford Gardens, which backs onto the house.

Couple escape injury in 'suspicious' fire
A married couple have escaped injury after a suspicious fire seriously damaged their home in Antrim on Thursday. The blaze is thought to have spread from a heating oil tank and shed at the back of the house in Oriel Park in the early hours of Thursday morning. The couple's pet cat was treated for serious burns.

Woman Escapes Injury In Larne House Fire
A woman has escaped injury following a house fire in Larne, Co Antrim. Four fire appliances attended the scene shortly before 2.20am on Tuesday. The woman made her way out of the property before the fire crews arrived. The fire gutted the two-storey detached property which involved an oil tank.

Residents had to be evacuated from their homes after a major fire broke out in the early hours of Monday morning in Dunmurry, Co Antrim. A shed caught fire and spread to an oil tank in Sunnyhill Park at around 4am. The fire spread to nearby properties and caused extensive damage to three houses.
