Catholic maintained schools amalgamate
Two small rural maintained primary schools have been given the go-ahead to amalgamate in Co Fermanagh.
Education Minister, Jane Kennedy approved a development proposal from the Catholic Council for Maintained Schools (CCMS) to amalgamate Corranny and Cornagague primary schools to become a new co-educational primary school to be built at Aghadrumsee in the county.
“This proposal to bring both schools together is in the best interests of the children and staff and I wish everyone involved in this venture every best wish for the future," the Minister said.
Corranny PS, which has 81 pupils, opened in 1963 just four miles from Roslea.
Cornagague PS, which has 68 pupils, was built in 1962 in the Magheraveely area of Co Fermanagh.
Meanwhile, Jane Kennedy has announced that she has approved a Development Proposal to allow for increased enrolments at Meascoil Feirste, the Irish medium post primary school in Belfast.
Announcing her decision, which will see enrolment capacity increase from 400 – 600 pupils, the Minister said: “The growing popularity of the Irish/Medium primary school sector, coupled with the desire of parents to see their children continue their education through the medium of Irish, means that the Meanscoil is full to capacity.
“Enrolments have grown well beyond initial numbers and my decision facilitates parental choice and fulfils my Department’s duty to encourage and facilitate Irish/medium education.”
Meanscoil Feirste is the only grant aided post primary Irish medium school in Northern Ireland.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.

Two Co Antrim primary schools are to close because of falling rolls. The Sinn Fein Education Minister, John O'Dowd, has approved a proposal to close Lourdes Primary School, Whitehead: "I have agreed to the closure [because of] a decline in enrolments in recent years [that] has given rise to concern.

NI Primary Schools Free To Prepare Pupils For Transfer Test
Primary schools in Northern Ireland are now free to prepare pupils for unregulated transfer tests. Education Minister Peter Weir reversed his decision which means schools can now support their pupils by supplying support materials and carry out preparation for tests during core teaching hours.

Holywood schools get amalgamation go-ahead
Education Minister Barry Gardiner has approved a development proposal to amalgamate two primary schools in Holywood, Co Down. The two existing primary schools – Holywood and Redburn – will amalgamate into a new co-educational primary school to be built on the site currently occupied by Priory College.
