Minimum Income Floor For UC Claimants To Remain Unchanged
The minimum income floor for self-employed universal credit claimants will remain suspended until next year, following confirmation received by Alliance Communities spokesperson Kellie Armstrong.
Following the extension by the UK Government, Ms Armstrong wrote to Communities Minister Carál Ní Chuilín to enquire about discussions with her counterparts in Westminster regarding extending the suspension here. The minimum income floor suspension was first introduced in March as part of the pandemic response but is due to expire this week. The Minister has now confirmed it will be extended until the end of April.
The floor assumes a level of earnings based on the minimum wage and how many hours you are expected to be available for work. If your earnings are below this, the floor is used to work out your entitlement, rather than your actual earnings.
Ms Armstrong, said: "I am delighted the Minister has confirmed the extension of the suspension of the minimum income floor until the end of April.
"It means self-employed people will continue to receive crucial financial support from universal credit based on current actual earnings, which will provide additional protection for those who have seen a drop in their earnings due to the pandemic.
"People have suffered enough through this pandemic. I hope this move will at least provide some access to financial support for a group of people who have not been able to access financial support through the Department for the Economy packages."

Minimum wage set to increase in NI
Minister for Social Development John Spellar has announced an increase in the national minimum wage for Northern Ireland in line with that announced for the UK. The adult rate of the minimum wage will increase from £4.85 to £5.05 in October this year - in line with average earnings - with a further six per cent increase to £5.35 in October 2006.

Two People Rescued From House Fire In Coleraine
Two people have been rescued from a blaze at a house in Coleraine. The fire broke out in the kitchen of the property shortly before midnight on Tuesday, 13 February. Firefighters rescued a woman, aged in her 60's, from a first floor window ledge. A man was also found in the stairway area. They received treatment at the scene.

Ten people rescued from burning flats
Ten people have escaped serious injury following a suspected arson attack on a block of flats in Co Antrim on Sunday. When fire crews were called out to the flats in Laurel Grov, Lisburn, at about 11.30pm they found some residents hanging out of windows calling for help.
