Dara to shed over 550 jobs at St Athan airbase
Government agency the Defence Aviation Repair Centre (Dara) is set to lose at least 550 jobs.
Deputy General Secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union Jack Dromey described the cuts as "a tragedy for St. Athan".
He said that last year the union had revealed government plans for an 'End-to-End Review' to change the basis for Dara, while agreeing a £77 million investment in Project Red Dragon, a hi-tech aviation business park at St. Athan with Dara at its heart.
Mr Dromey said that he had expressed concerns that government's 'End-to-End' review had "threatened Dara generally and St Athan in particular".
He said: "The end-to-end review always posed a question mark over the future of Dara and now I fear the worst.
"Last year, when the go-ahead was given for Project Red Dragon, it was said that the future was bright. My concern is that we now see the prospect of the death of Dara by a thousand cuts."
The proposed superhanger at St Athan, which is under construction, would be the largest repair and refurbishment facility in Europe.
Last year DARA’s Chief Executive, Steve Hill described the project as a "major milestone for DARA" and that the importance of the world-class project "could not be underestimated".
DARA was created in April 1999 when the RAF’s Maintenance Group Defence Agency (MGDA) and the Naval Aircraft Repair Organisation (NARO) were amalgamated.
DARA employs around 4,000 staff located on four sites in the UK: St Athan near Cardiff; Fleetlands at Gosport, Hampshire; Almondbank in Perthshire, Scotland; and Sealand in Flintshire, North Wales.
