Rid Belfast of racism says Council
Belfast City Council today called on everyone to play their part in eliminating the scourge of racism from society.
Condemning the most recent violent racist attacks, in south and west Belfast at the weekend, Councillor Tom Ekin, Chairman of the Council’s Good Relations Steering Panel, said it was the duty of every person in Belfast to reject all manifestations of racism "no matter what form it takes”.
Speaking at the start of European Week Against Racism, Councillor Ekin said: “The Council has a vision of a Belfast that is a stable, tolerant, fair and pluralist society, where individuality is respected and diversity is celebrated, in an inclusive manner. However, the Council cannot fulfill that vision alone.
"Good relations is about living and working together with understanding and respect and without fear or mistrust. It is incumbent upon every man, woman and child to play their own part, no matter how small, in helping to bring the very small minority who perpetrate these despicable race hate crimes to justice and thus eliminate the scourge of racism from our society.”
Councillor Ekin pointed out that the Council already was playing its part, through initiatives such as the Good Relations Funding Programme, which is available to community groups to develop anti-racism projects.
Belfast City Council’s Good Relations Steering Panel also will host a discussion event, ‘Building Our Future Together: A Shared City’, at City Hall on Monday April 5.
