Books of condolence opened for Madrid bombing victims
The Lord Mayor of Belfast has requested that Books of Condolence be opened at City Hall for the victims of yesterday’s terrorist bombs in the Spanish capital of Madrid.
Speaking from London today, the Lord Mayor, Councillor Martin Morgan, condemned the “brutal savagery” of the bombings.
He said: “The people of Belfast are only too familiar with the terrible legacy of terrorist atrocities, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Spanish people, and particularly those who have lost loved ones at this time.”
The Books of Condolence were opened at City Hall this morning. They will be available for signing until 4.30pm today (Friday) and thereafter during normal City Hall opening hours – 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am to 4.30pm on Fridays.
Derry City Mayor, Councillor Shaun Gallagher, described yesterday’s terrorism attacks in Madrid as “appalling”.
Reacting to the atrocity, the Mayor said: “I am horrified and appalled at the senseless killing of innocent people in Spain. The devastating images of dead bodies, injured people and debris are all too familiar to us. We can only sympathise with the people of Madrid on their terrible loss and offer our support at this terrible time.
“I hope that the people of Spain will unite and stand strong when they come out to vote in the election on Sunday. They can prove that democracy can overcome terrorism.”
Reports from Spain on Friday indicated that, with a number of people still to be accounted for, the death toll had reached 198 and over 1,400 people had been injured in the atrocity.
Church services were held throughout Spain today as the Spanish people took part in the first of three days of official mourning.
