Further education centres to get £40m boost

Four further education centres in east Down and Lisburn are to benefit from a £40 million investment, the Government announced today.

Employment Minister, Jane Kennedy said the Public Private Partnership project would provide new accommodation for the East Down Institute campuses at Downpatrick, Newcastle and Ballynahinch and Lisburn Institute.

Speaking at the launch in Lisburn, the Minister said: "Last week I launched my vision for the future of the Further Education sector in Northern Ireland. The strategy document ‘Further Education Means Business’ has set local economic development as a key objective of the sector.

"To achieve this, urgent action is required to bring the colleges’ physical environment up to a level that will be fit for their purposes.

"My announcement today of this £40m investment underlines my commitment to the FE sector in general, and also recognises the central role that further education plays in the local economy."

Last February Finance Minister, Ian Pearson announced that the accommodation needs of the East Down and Lisburn Institutes, with a total capital value of around £40m, were to be taken forward through PPP.
