'Zero Tolerance' For Online Abuse Of General Election Candidates

Sinn Fein deputy leader Michelle O'Neill has warned so-called online trolls there will be "zero tolerance" of abuse towards election candidates.

Speaking out on the issue, Ms O'Neill said that women in public life are often more exposed to abusive language online.

The Mid Ulster MLA referenced comments made towards the party's Westminster candidate for Foyle, Elisha McCallion.

She said: "Those in public life are often targeted with online abuse, threats, harassment and intimidation and it is often women who are targeted most but no matter how often it occurs it should never be tolerated.

"My colleague Elisha McCallion has been the victim of such online abuse, particularly in recent days, and much of it has been vile, disgusting, misogynistic abuse.

"No one, including public representatives, should be expected to put up with this."

Ms O'Neill added: "Elisha has children who should not be exposed to abuse like this so publicly directed at their mother.

"No one should have to face this type of abuse and I would call on all those in public life, from across all parties to come together and to condemn it so those responsible are sent a clear message that it will not be tolerated."

Roadworks Announced In Antrim

The first phase of a resurfacing scheme is set to get underway in Ahoghill, Co Antrim, next month.

This £117,000 project will see the U2055 Crosskeys Road improved over a 1.1km distance from Grange Road to Ballyscullion Road.

Work will begin on Monday 02 December and run until Friday 20 December.

During the project, a full road closure will be in place from 8am to 6pm. A diversion will be in operation via Grange Road, Taylorstown Road and Crosskeys Road (and vice-versa).

The Department for Infrastructure has warned drivers to expect some delays and advised to allow additional time when travelling in the area.

Locals Shape Future Of Co Down Park

A range of improvements are set to be delivered at County Down's Delamont Country Park following a successful public consultation.

Following a recent drop-in session at the park, the local community provided positive feedback on plans for an improved trail network, enhanced viewing platform, improved visitor centre and key natural and built heritage features.

Those at the event were also very receptive to the introduction of different tools including interpretation signs and audio technology on the site.

These works were shaped by the public along with in-depth analysis, site assessment, and engagement with a variety of stakeholders.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Casey said: "The Council is pleased so many people attended the drop-in session and provided positive feedback on the proposals. The Council, following consideration of the Masterplan, will move to initiate work on implementing the plan and making the project a reality."

The Council will now seek to develop the projects into greater detail and seek to initiate implementation on a phased basis.
