Army to offer bursary scheme for technical posts
Cash incentives and educational bursaries are being offered to soldier recruits for the first time to attract those with certain sought-after skills.
The Army will be offering 'Golden Hellos' to those with suitable qualifications from schools, colleges or universities to encourage them to join and will compensate them for the time spent gaining their qualification - suitable candidates may receive up to £8,000. They may also be offered to those with just the minimum entry requirements if they choose to enter some of the more technically demanding trades.
The Army Vocational Bursary scheme is aimed at candidates of good academic ability who display sound soldier qualities and will be paid while they study a vocational subject before enlisting as a soldier.
The Head of Army Recruitment in Northern Ireland, Lt. Col. Dick Rafferty, said: “Golden Hellos and Army Vocational Bursaries have been introduced to focus recruiting on areas within the Army were we have a shortage of skills, mainly within the technical corps.
“I would urge anyone considering a technical career to give serious consideration in applying to either scheme. On entry to the Army, you’ll receive training second to none with a salary to match, travel the world and enjoy as much action and adventure as you can handle.”
The preferred study areas for Army Vocational Bursaries include maths, science and languages at ‘A’ Level, an Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) or a Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) Award at national Diploma level.
Vocational areas to qualify are: Construction and Built Environment; Engineering; Health and Social Care; Hospitality and Catering; Information and Communication Technology and Science. Also, tertiary level bursaries are available to those studying within the language and healthcare fields.
Basic bursaries will be worth £1,500 a year during years 12 and/or 13, while those studying language, pharmacy, nursing, or environmental health at tertiary level will get £1,000 for each year. Those who gain bursaries will be expected to serve the four-year standard minimum engagement.
