Man appears in court over Magee attack
A 52-year-old man has appeared in court today charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on world champion boxer Eamonn Magee.
Joseph Clarke, from Lagmore Dale in west Belfast, also faced charges of possession of an offensive weapon and damage to the car in which Mr Magee was travelling.
A detective constable told the court that Mr Clarke replied "definitely not" to all three charges.
Mr Magee was dragged from his car and attacked by a gang of men on the weekend beginning February 29.
He suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula as well as a punctured lung during the incident.
The WBU welterweight champion, from the Ardoyne area of north Belfast, has since announced that he is to retire from the ring because of his injuries but hopes to continue within the sport as coach or manager.
Mr Clarke was remanded in custody at Lisburn Magistrates' Court on Monday, and will appear again on 30 March.
