Pipe Bomb Detonates Outside West Belfast House

Police are appealing for information after a pipe bomb detonated outside a house in west Belfast.

A police presence was established in the Aitnamona Crescent area of the city on Sunday morning, 27 October, with the road closed to traffic and nearby homes evacuated for some time.

The occupant had reported hearing what they believed was a firework going off at around 11.30pm on Saturday evening, before waking the following morning to discover the remnants of a pipe bomb type device in their garden. The viable device caused damage to the front door of the property.

ATO attended the scene and removed the pipe bomb remnants for further examination.

Detective Inspector Stephen Harvey said: "Thankfully no one was injured as a result of this reckless attack. We are working to establish a motive for this incident and I am appealing to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area last night or anyone with any information that could help our investigation to contact detectives in Musgrave Police Station on 101, quoting reference number 679 27/10/19."

Details can also be provided anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
