NI Households Recycling 50% Of Waste
Over 50% of household waste is now being recycled in Northern Ireland, latest figures have shown.
The Department of Agricultural, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) hailed the recent progress which has brought recycling and composting rates to an all-time high.
Some 50.6% of waste is now being recycled compared with a mere 10% when records began in 2002, meaning the region has exceeded its target of 50% 18 months ahead of schedule.
Assistant Director of Environmental Policy at DAERA Owen Lyttle praised the recent figures: "Achieving this result reflects a tremendous effort by all those involved in the waste management sector, local and central government, reprocessing sector, the voluntary sector and of course the public."
Speaking at 'The Future for Plastic?' Conference at Titanic Belfast, Mr Lyttle said the progress bodes well for other challenges ahead.
"Being able to meet this demanding target indicates that if everyone takes small steps to change their behaviour then we can make a significant difference, as a country, to protecting and improving the environment.
"Tackling climate change is about people. Our attitude and a willingness to change will be critical to meeting the challenge."

About 55,000 homes in Belfast are to benefit from a new recycling scheme that will seek to maximise the amount of waste households can recycle. The changes will be rolled out between August and November and will affect inner-city homes currently on a black recycling box collection, as well as apartments with communal recycling facilities.

NI Council Secures Almost £186K For Household Recycling Centres
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has secured £186,200 funding for household recycling centres in the district. The investment, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), will mean an additional 365 tonnes can be recycled each year.

Police have condemned those who set a fire at a fuel recycling plant, as "the most idiotic and dangerous incident of the year". Police were called to reports of a fire at the plant at the Brannish Road Industrial Estate in Downpatrick.
