Fishing Crew Airlifted From Drifting Boat

Five fisherman have been airlifted to safety after their vessel became stranded on rocks off the Co Down coast.

A multi-agency task force attended the scene at Phennick Point outside Ardglass harbour in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 23 October.

Crew on board the 24 metre vessel issued a Mayday call at around 5.15am after they became stuck on rocks and began taking on water. RNLI lifeboats were mobilised from Portaferry and Newcastle as the stranded vessel became lodged further onto the rocks.

Due to worsening weather and tidal conditions, the lifeboats were unable to tow the vessel off the rocks and the Irish Coast Guard Rescue 116 helicopter was scrambled from Dublin.

The fishing crew were then airlifted by the helicopter and brought to safety.

Speaking after the rescue, Newcastle RNLI Coxswain Nathan Leneghan said: "This morning's rescue was a success due to multi-agency teamwork with our colleagues in the Irish Coast Guard, volunteers at Portaferry RNLI and Portaferry and Newcastle Coastguard teams. Thankfully this was positive outcome, and all five fishermen are safe and well."
