L'Derry Man Fights Off Masked Gang

A man has been struck with a hammer while fighting off a masked gang during an aggravated burglary in L'Derry.

Police said the frightening ordeal occurred in the Derrymore area of Hazelbank on Wednesday evening, 18 September.

A number of masked men, one reportedly carrying a firearm, smashed the window of a house at around 9.30pm.

A man and woman were inside the property at the time.

The man, aged in his twenties, was struck on the arm with what is believed to have been a hammer when he fought off the masked men and prevented them from entering the property. He sustained a minor injury but did not require hospital treatment, while the woman was uninjured.

One line of police enquiry is that it may have been a paramilitary style assault.

Detective Inspector Michael Winters said: "I want to appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw a number of men acting suspiciously, or anyone who has information about this to get in touch with our detectives at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 2048 of 18/09/19."

Details can also be provided in confidence via Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
