Boxing champ suffers broken leg in attack

WBU welterweight boxing champion, Eamonn Magee has had his leg broken in an attack in Belfast.

The 32-year-old west Belfast man was dragged from his car and attacked by a gang of men at the weekend.

He suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula as well as a possible punctured lung during the incident.

Magee was in line for a major clash with former WBA welterweight champion Sharmba Mitchell, however this is almost certain to be postponed.

His trainer, John Breen described the news as "sickening" and said it could not have come at a more inappropriate time in his career.

Speculation has already begun to mount that Magee may have to call time on his career because of his injuries.

Such is the extent of these that he has already had surgery on Monday, and is expected to go under the knife again on Wednesday.

It is not yet known why the boxer was assaulted.
