Pair Sentenced For Benefit Fraud

A man and woman have been handed suspended sentences after they were convicted of benefit fraud.

The pair were dealt with at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 03 September after each claiming payments they were not entitled to.

Barbara Thompson, aged 50, of Glenview Crescent in Belfast claimed Income Support and Carer's Allowance totalling £1,655 while failing to declare employment. She was sentenced to three months imprisonment suspended for 18 months and order to pay £73 court costs.

Aaron Traynor, aged 29, of Glencolin Manor, Belfast claimed Universal Credit totalling £2,334 by making false declarations. He was sentenced to three months imprisonment suspended for 18 months.

Both were ordered to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department for Communities.

A man has been given a suspended sentence for claiming over £6,000 in benefits he was not entitled to. 61-year-old Sean Donnelly of Adair Gardens in Cookstown claimed Disability Living Allowance totalling £6,344 while failing to declare a change in circumstances.

Fourteen Sentenced In East Belfast UVF Investigation
The PSNI have welcomed the sentencing of thirteen men and one woman in connection with an investigation into suspected criminality linked to the East Belfast UVF by the Paramilitary Crime Task Force. The defendants were sentenced over the five-week period, from 11 January to 16 February, at Belfast Crown Court.

Thomas 'Slab' Murphy Sentenced To 18 Months For Tax Evasion
A former IRA commander has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for tax evasion. Thomas 'Slab' Murphy was sentenced at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin on Friday. In December last year, Mr Murphy was convicted of nine charges of tax evasion. Mr Murphy, 66, from Ballybinaby in Co Louth denied the charges.
