PSNI hold human rights conference

A major human rights conference on policing and victims has taken place in Belfast today.

Delegates attending the two-day event, entitled 'Supporting Victims, Delivering Justice', were encouraged to tell police what they want and need to make them feel safer in their communities.

A variety of local, national and international speakers made presentations to the conference at the Ramada Hotel, which is the latest in a series of Human Rights forums organised by the Police Service as a result of recommendations in the Patten Report.

Keynote speakers included senior figures from the legal profession, representatives of victims groups and high-ranking police officers.

Acting Assistant Chief Constable Judith Gillespie, who has responsibility for Criminal Justice, said: "A considerable amount of planning and effort has gone into making this event possible but in many ways the real work is only beginning. We want to assure victims that their interests are at the forefront of our thinking. We expect to hear at first hand from them about their feelings, concerns and needs."

A series of workshops and panel sessions have been built into the programme with the aim of ensuring that the conference produces clear insights into how best victims can be supported. Senior officers also gave an account of PSNI policy, policing developments and partnership initiatives.
