Teen Critical Following New Lodge Stabbings
An 18-year-old male is in critical condition in hospital following a number of reported stabbing incidents in the New Lodge area of north Belfast.
Police said the teenager was stabbed in the back near the controversial bonfire on Thursday evening, 08 August. A 39-year-old man also sustained stab wounds to his arm and hip. His condition is not believed to be life-threatening.
Two suspects, aged 28 and 21, were arrested early this morning at an address in the Oldpark Road area on suspicion of offences including grievous bodily harm with intent.
Chief Inspector Kelly Moore said "We are aware of footage circulating on social media and this will be examined as part of the wider investigation. I would encourage anyone who was in the area and who can assist the investigation to please make contact with us by calling 101, quoting reference 1818 08/08/19."
Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
The stabbings come as riots broke out in the New Lodge area on Thursday as police and contractors moved in to remove the controversial bonfire.
A number of individuals positioned themselves atop the anti-internment bonfire in defiance of its removal. Officers later pulled out due to the escalating violence and a large number of women, children and young people in the area.
Three police officers were injured during the public disorder as youths launched missiles, including fireworks and masonry, towards the police line.
Six petrol bombs were recovered and a 13-year-old was arrested on suspicion of riotous and disorderly behaviour.
Assistant Chief Constable Alan Todd, Commander of the New Lodge Policing Operation said on Thursday: "As a Police Service we have been clear in our position that we will always seek to support partner agencies and landowners to ensure they can conduct their lawful business.
"It is our assessment that the majority of local residents do not want this bonfire. I apologise for the inconvenience today's operation has caused and for not being able to deliver our objective of supporting the removal of the bonfire. I hope that the local community understands my primary concern today was public safety.
"We will be reviewing CCTV footage to identify those who have been involved in the disorder, who can expect to be the subject of further police investigation and action."
