Irishman Shane Lowry Lifts The Open Title
Ireland's Shane Lowry has secured his first major championship win at The 148th Open at Royal Portrush.
The 32-year-old from County Offaly entered Sunday's final round with a comfortable lead, and closed out his sensational few days with a score of 72, a dominant six-shot victory on 15 under par.
The bleak weather failed to dampen any spirits as thousands of fans lined the 18th hole to cheer Lowry on, with hundreds then flooding the fairway ahead of the Irishman as he made his way to take his final shot.
England's Tommy Fleetwood and America's world number one Brooks Keopka remained hot on Lowry's heels throughout the day, but couldn't manage to close the gap on him.
In lifting the Claret Jug on Sunday evening, he joins the likes of Fred Daly, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy as an Open Champion.
The proud dad paid tribute to his family and caddie Brian 'Bo' Martin, before dedicating the win to the volunteers at Royal Portrush and dedicated fans who cheered him on.
