Irish Ferries lay off staff from three laid up vessels
Irish Ferries have confirmed this morning that 450 crew members employed on the three ferries withdrawn from service on Tuesday February 24 have been laid off.
The company announced yesterday that three ferries, operating on the Rosslare to Pembroke, Dublin to Holyhead fast ferry and the Rosslare to Cherbourg services, were being temporarily withdrawn from service on Tuesday.
The action being taken by the company involves the temporary laying off of 450 crew members employed on the company’s three ferry vessels Jonathan Swift fast ferry, Isle of Inishmore and Normandy.
Notice of the company’s intention to tie-up its vessels and proceed with the laying off of crew members was formally served on the personnel involved and their trade union representatives on February 16.
Irish Ferries confirmed that a small number of crew members (76 persons in total ) were being retained to provide care and essential maintenance on each of the three vessels whilst they are out of service.
The company's ferry Ulysses, which sails between Dublin - Holyhead, is continuing to operate.
Arrangments are being made to transport home crew members aboard the Isle of Inishmore vessel which is currently in Pembroke Dock and the Normandy which is undergoing her annual re-fit in Birkenhead.
Irish ferries have blamed the redundancies on a failure to reach agreement with one of the trade unions over cost reduce measures.

Workers Vote On Grounding Aer Lingus Plan
Workers at Ireland's biggest airline are preparing to take a vote on action that could potentially cripple the airline's entire operation - including its new Belfast 'hub' operation. Aer Lingus announced plans this week to cut its costs by €76 million annually, resulting in the axing of 1,500 jobs in many of its crew bases.

Irish Ferries have confirmed that three of their four services from Ireland have been temporarily withdrawn today. The company blamed the action on a failure to reach agreement with unions over staffing levels, pay and conditions.

New Ferries For Strangford And Rathlin
Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has secured £2m in funding to allow a project for two new ferries to operate in Northern Ireland. One will operate on the Ballycastle/Rathlin Island route, and the other will be on the Strangford/Portaferry route.
