Minister announces £2m food sector funding
Agriculture Minister, Ian Pearson has announced details of a £2 million EU award package for the Northern Ireland food processing sector.
The awards, totalling £2.46 million from EU funds and £0.35 million from national funds, assist nine projects submitted by applicants under the EU Agricultural Processing and Marketing Grant Scheme. The Scheme is designed to improve the economic performance and international competitiveness of the food processing sector.
Commenting on the awards, the Minister said: "I am very pleased to announce a third round of awards under the EU Agricultural Processing and Marketing Grant Scheme, which forms part of the Northern Ireland Programme for Building Sustainable Prosperity.
"The projects assessed continue to be of a high quality and the new investment will further enhance the competitiveness of these companies, increase value to what is produced in Northern Ireland and provide a lasting benefit to primary producers. In addition, the project applicants currently employ a cumulative total of 478 staff and these projects are estimated to create a further 55 new jobs."
The Minister also advised that the EU Agricultural Processing and Marketing Grant Scheme remains open for applications. A copy of the Scheme Brochure and the appropriate application form is available from the Supply Chain Development Branch on 028 9052 4499/4817.

Slight Decline In NI Food And Processing Sector
Northern Ireland's food and drinks processing sector experienced a slight decline in 2016, a new report has revealed. Provisional estimates from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs states turnover fell 3.1% from £4.424 billion in 2015 to £4.423bn in 2016.

Man Dies At Meat Processing Factory In L'Derry
A man has died at a meat processing factory in Co L'Derry. The incident happened at WM Grant's on the Coney Road on Sunday, 09 April. The man, aged in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death is "unclear at this time", according to the PSNI.
