Integrated Primary School Opens In Omagh
A new integrated primary school has officially opened in Co Tyrone today.
Pupils and staff of Omagh Integrated Primary celebrated the development following completion of a £7 million project.
The building is made up of 14 classrooms with capacity for over 330 pupils, a nursery unit for up to 26 children and a school funded wrap around care centre.
The development has facilitated the continued growth of the school since its origination in 1990. Work began over two years ago and the school opened in late June 2018, but is now marking the completion of work.
Speaking at the official opening, Fiona Hepper, Deputy Secretary at the Department of Education said: "This is a day of celebration for all the pupils and staff of Omagh Integrated primary. The school has come a long way since it opened in 1990 with just 32 pupils housed in three mobile classrooms with a further 24 children in a nursery class.
"Working in the Department of Education, I always welcome the opportunity to see at first hand the significant benefits of capital investment in our school estate. The opening of any new school is something to be enjoyed, especially when you see the positive changes it can bring to the daily life of a school, not just for the pupils and staff- but also for the wider community.
"The Department has invested over £7 million in this wonderful new school. I want to wish you every success as you embark on this new chapter."
Sinn Fein's Education Spokesperson Karen Mullan welcomed the official opening. The Foyle MLA said it was a "fantastic day" for pupils and staff and offered her best wishes for success in the "incredible new school".
