NI buildings at risk register placed on-line

Environment Minister, Angela Smith has launched the first on-line register of buildings at risk in Northern Ireland.

'BARNI' is a joint project between DOE’s Environment and Heritage Service and the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society.

At the launch of the database in the Crescent Arts Centre - itself an important listed building – Mrs Smith said the database would raise public awareness of the need to protect Northern Ireland’s Built Heritage.

“The Buildings At Risk Northern Ireland register highlights the vulnerability of our historic buildings and will, I trust, act as a catalyst for their preservation and re-use," the Minister said. "It will be an essential tool for all those concerned about the future of our built heritage.

“The Register describes listed and other historic buildings throughout Northern Ireland, ranging from humble dwellings to large industrial complexes which are currently at risk and require a sustainable use and future.

Entries to the BARNI Register have been included primarily on the basis of an external visual inspection of the condition of the building. All listed buildings that are considered to be ‘at risk’ are included.

A number of non-listed buildings, particularly those situated within a conservation area, which have local, historic and architectural significance and which make a contribution to the urban or rural setting, are also included.
