Cross Border Firms Taking 'Wait And See' Brexit Approach
A recent survey by InterTradeIreland has revealed a continuing pattern of businesses deferring decisions and stalling investments against the backdrop of Brexit.
The Business Monitor found that only 11% of firms planned to increase levels of staff training in the first quarter of 2019, compared to 17% in the same period last year, while only 4% considered upgrading or changing premises. Almost a third of larger companies (31%) say that Brexit is having a negative impact on investment decisions. Tellingly, the number of businesses planning to invest in innovation remains low, with just 6% of firms planning to spend on research and development over the next 12 months.
InterTradeIreland's quarterly Business Monitor survey, which commenced in 2008, is the largest and most comprehensive business survey on the island and is based on the views of more than 750 business managers across Northern Ireland and Ireland. The Business Monitor differs from other surveys in being the 'voice of local businesses', feeding directly from telephone interviews conducted with firms of all sizes from across a range of sectors to track all-island economic indicators such as sales, employment, business outlook and other specific topical research areas on a quarter by quarter basis.
The latest findings also point to the specific vulnerabilities of smaller businesses, with 34% of micro firms recording profit margins of less than 5%. Such small margins leave these companies particularly vulnerable to external shocks that cause even minor increases in costs.
Employment too remains static. Most businesses (89%) have not increased or decreased staff in the past quarter. It's a similar pattern with sales, with 65% of those surveyed reporting no change. Close to a fifth (18%) of firms have seen sales increase, while 16% have experienced a drop. For businesses in manufacturing, 22% of the sector experienced a fall in sales in Q1 2019.
In addition, there is a clear link between exporting and out-performance. Firms that export have better outcomes across a range of key indicators including turnover, employment and productivity. However, the latest figures point to a slowing down in the performance of cross-border traders, with only 18% reporting an increase in sales in Q1 2019, compared to 26% in the previous quarter, a drop of over 40%. Close to half of cross-border traders (44%) say they have been negatively impacted by Brexit.
Aidan Gough, InterTradeIreland's Strategy and Policy Director, said: "While the wider economy on the island remains resilient, there are further signs of difficulties generated by the uncertainty around Brexit. Businesses are cautious, and this could potentially impact on growth prospects.
"The drop in the number of cross-border traders reporting sales increases is also a concern. Our research points to the significantly increased productivity of cross-border traders over firms that do not export; bringing into sharp focus the value of encouraging growth in cross-border trade. We have a number of supports and services to help businesses enter a new jurisdiction for the first time. InterTradeIreland has helped over 39,000 businesses explore new cross-border markets, develop new products, processes and services and become investor ready since we started work in 1999."
InterTradeIreland's Brexit Advisory Service helps businesses prepare for changes in the trading relationship between Britain and the EU. This includes a new on-line learning tool and funding of up to £4,500/ €5,000.
