Arrest After Attempted Hijacking In L'Derry

A man has been arrested after an attempted hijacking of a car in L'Derry while a woman and two children were in the vehicle.

Police said the man entered the driver's seat in the Ballymagroarty area of the city shortly before 1am this morning, Thursday 25 April, and tried to drive off.

He also attempted to take the handbag of the woman, who was sitting in the front passenger seat while the children were in the back.

A suspect was arrested a short time later on suspicion of attempted hijacking, attempted robbery and being in charge of a vehicle while unfit through drink or drugs.

The woman and children were unharmed.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact detectives in Strand Road on 101, or alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Members of the public intervened to stop an attempted hijacking in L'Derry. A man approached a silver Toyota Avensis in the Carlisle Road area just after 11.45am on Saturday, 10 March. The man damaged the window wipers and the bonnet before getting into the vehicle and trying to make off in it.

Another Attempted Hijacking In Belfast
A man with a knife has attempted to hijack a van in North Belfast in the early hours of this morning. The driver of the van was threatened as he made a delivery in the Ardoyne area of Belfast at around 05.30. There have been 6 attempted hijackings in the greater Belfast area so far this year while there was a further 13 successful hijackings.

Appeal After Violent Attempted Hijack
Detectives in Newtownabbey have appealed for information following a violent attempted hijacking outside Ballyclare on Tuesday evening. A 23-year-old man sustained bruising and a cut to his hand when four masked males in another vehicle rammed his car.
