Security Alert Ongoing In Belfast's Botanic Area
A security alert is ongoing in the Botanic area of south Belfast this afternoon, Thursday 07 March.
Police have closed the Cromwell Road following the discovery of a suspicious package.
A number of properties have been evacuated and the road cordoned off at the junctions of Wolseley Street and Ireton Street, the junction of Cromwell Road and Botanic Avenue and the junction of Cromwell Road and Lawrence Street.
Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
Sinn Féin Councillor Deirdre Hargey has condemned those behind the alert. She said: "The ongoing security alert on Cromwell Road has caused significant disruption to local residents this afternoon with a number of properties being evacuated and the streets closed.
"Those responsible for this disruption have shown complete disregard for the local area. There can be no justification for this type of reckless activity."
