Sanchez names first NI squad for friendly

Lawrie Sanchez has named his first ever side as Northern Ireland manager for next week's friendly with Norway at Windsor Park.

The only surprise in the 24-man squad sees the return of Nottingham Forest midfielder Danny Sonner after an absence of three years.

Irish League players Andy Smith and Gary Hamilton, of Glentoran and Portadown respectively, retain their places after being handed debuts under former boss Sammy McIlroy.

Next Wednesday's game is the first in a five match build up to the 2006 World Cup Qualifiers in which Northern Ireland are paired with England and Wales.

Next month Sanchez' men travel to Estonia for a friendly inTallinn. Then a three match Caribbean Tour has been organised for June against St Kitts and Nevis, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

Next week's squad to face Norway is as follows:

NI squad - Goalkeepers: Maik Taylor (Birmingham City), Roy Carroll (Manchester United); Defenders: George McCartney (Sunderland), Aaron Hughes (Newcastle United), Stephen Craigan (Motherwell), Chris Baird (Southampton), Peter Kennedy (Wigan Athletic), Colin Murdock (Hibs), Danny Griffin (Stockport County), Mark Williams (Wimbledon).

Midfielders: Keith Gillespie (Leicester City), Michael Hughes (Crystal Palace), Steve Jones (Crewe), Jeff Whitley (Sunderland), Philip Mulryne (Norwich City), Damien Johnson (Birmingham City), Danny Sonner (Nottingham Forest).

Forwards: David Healy (Preston North End), Andy Smith (Glentoran), Andrew Kirk (Hearts), Gary Hamilton (Portadown), Stuart Elliott (Hull City), Paul McVeigh (Norwich City), James Quinn (Willem II).

Adelaide Street Revitalisation Works 'Substantially Complete'
Infrastructure Minister Nicola Mallon has welcomed the progress being made on a scheme to revitalise Adelaide Street in Belfast city centre, which is now "substantially completed". The pilot project was funded from Minister Mallon's Blue/Green Infrastructure Fund and delivered in partnership with Belfast City Council.

Primark Donates £500,000 To Support Businesses Affected By Fire
Retailer Primark is donating £500,000 to Belfast City Council's City Recovery Investment Fund. The fund is being set up after a number of businesses have been severely affected by the fire at the Bank Buildings which happened over three weeks ago. A cordon remains in place and 14 firms have been closed for up to four months.

St Patrick's Day event has support of BCC says councillor
The Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Good Relations Steering Panel has challenged claims that the Council is not supporting St Patrick’s Day in Belfast. It follows a protest outside Belfast City Hall last week by the St Patrick's Carnival Committee who claim the Council isn't funding this year's event at the City Hall.

Sanchez names NI squad ahead of Portugal friendly
Northern Ireland Manager Lawrie Sanchez has named his squad for Tuesday night's friendly against Portugal at Windsor Park. The 19-man squad arrived in the province on Sunday ahead of the game which is part of the IFA's 125th anniversary.
