Ombudsman To Look Into Police Concerns Over Airport Incident

The Police Ombudsman's Office is currently assessing whether it should investigate the response of airport police to disorder at Belfast International airport over the weekend.

A fight which broke out between two groups of passengers in the departures area on Saturday 02 February has sparked concerns over police actions.

A number of men engaged in an altercation and brandished weapons, including poles and a fire extinguisher, causing many shocked onlookers to move from the area.

The trouble was filmed and posted to social media and appeared to last almost 20 minutes, without any intervention.

"Complaints about airport police come under the remit of the Police Ombudsman's Office," a statement said.

"Our investigators have been in contact with the airport and are establishing whether this is a matter which should be investigated further."
