Day Of Alerts In L'Derry As Three Vans Hijacked

Three security alerts which caused a day of chaos in L'Derry yesterday have all now been declared hoaxes.

The city was on high alert on Monday 21 January after three separate vans sparked evacuations and police operations, only two days after a car bomb exploded outside the courthouse.

Police and Army Bomb disposal experts rushed to Northland Road last night where an Asda van was abandoned close to the Glenbank Road junction.

Around 40 people were evacuated from their homes.

Earlier on Monday, three masked men threw an object into the back of a white transit van and ordered the driver to take it to the city centre at around 11.30am.

The vehicle was abandoned on Creggan's Circular Road.

As officers worked to secure the area, four masked men hijacked a Royal Mail van in a separate incident and ordered the driver to take it to Lonemoor Road.

It was abandoned in the middle of Southway.

The incidents caused traffic chaos in the city, as well as causing up to 50 families to be evacuated from their homes.

Several controlled explosions were carried out on the first two vehicles.

Police arrested a 50-year-old man under the Terrorism Act yesterday in connection with the car bomb, which they believe may be linked to the new IRA, on Saturday evening.

The dissident republican group are believed to have hijacked a pizza delivery van, fitted it with explosive devices and abandoned it in Bishops Street.

The bomb went off moments after police secured the surrounding area.

Four men arrested over the weekend in connection with the attack have since been released unconditionally.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the act in the House of Commons on Monday.

She said: "This House stands together with the people of Northern Ireland in ensuring that we never go back to the violence and terror of the past."
