DVLA clamps down on number plate suppliers
Northern Ireland's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has declared war on number plate suppliers.
A DVLA consultation paper, on proposals to extend to Northern Ireland the requirement for the registration of number plate suppliers, was issued today.
The scheme is already in operation in England and Wales and its extension to Northern Ireland and Scotland would require number plate suppliers to register with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
Suppliers will be required to keep records of the sale of number plates and to obtain certain information from customers before making a sale. This will include proof of identity and proof of entitlement to the registration mark.
The consultation paper explains the reasons for extending the scheme to Northern Ireland and gives information on how it will operate and be enforced.
In September 1998 the Home Office established a Vehicle Crime Reduction Team to develop and implement a strategy to meet the target set be the Government to reduce vehicle crime by 30% by 2004.
One recommendation of the Team was the introduction of a statutory registration scheme to control the supply of number plates. This along with other measures is aimed at tackling vehicle crime.

Woman Dies In One-Vehicle Collision
An 82-year-old woman has died after her vehicle crashed into a skip in south Belfast at the weekend. The woman died on Sunday night after her car hit the skip on Galwally Avenue at about 14:40. Police are investigating the cause of the collision and are appealing for witnesses to contact them on the non-emergency number 101.

McIlroy Continues Return To Form
Rory McIlroy has won his fourth major title at the US PGA Championship at Valhalla. The Holywood, County Down world number one has now won his last two tournaments, following his first Open Championship last month. This latest win at Valhalla is the McIlroy's second US PGA Championship, following victory at Kiawah Island in 2012.

Two Die In Separate Motorcycle Crashes
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding two separate motorcycle crashes in Northern Ireland over the weekend, in which two people died. A 49-year-old died in Cushendun, County Antrim, when their motorcycle collided with a Suzuki SX4 on the Loughareema Road at around 10:35 on the morning of Saturday 31 May.

Three million cigarettes uncovered by customs
More than three million cigarettes smuggled into Northern Ireland concealed in a consignment of plate glass sheets have been seized in Belfast. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) recovered 3,175,400 counterfeit cigarettes over the weekend, from a container arriving in Belfast Docks from China.
