Alliance Party Encourages Strong Public Response To Rape Trial Consultation
Alliance MLA Paula Bradshaw has encouraged public response to a consultation process on proposed reforms of serious sexual offence trials in Northern Ireland.
Sir John Gillen's suggestions in his independent review include denying public access to the courtroom gallery, and new legislation to curb the use of social media during trials.
Mrs Bradshaw paid tribute to the retired judge for the "important work" he carried out in his report, which came off the back of the high-profile rape trial earlier this year, when two Ireland and Ulster Rugby players were acquitted of the crime.
"There is a pressing need to provide protections for both complainants and defendants in what is undoubtedly a difficult area," the south Belfast MLA said.
"It is vital now that people contribute constructively to the public consultation into the recommendations by responding with their thoughts.
"It is crucial we ensure the abysmally low rate of convictions for sexual crime is addressed, justice is done and victim's experiences of the system are improved."
