Letter Urges Leo Varadkar To Defend Irish Citizens In NI
Over 1,000 Irish citizens have signed a letter to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar appealing for him to "defend the rights of Irish citizens" living in Northern Ireland.
According to the signatories, the plea is necessary due to Brexit, "the ongoing political crisis in the north, and the persistent attacks on the Good Friday Agreement".
Among those urging Mr Varadkar to intervene are actor Adrian Dunbar, singer Frances Black and Stoke City footballer James McClean.
The letter states: "The political institutions remain in suspension as political unionism continues to deny respect for our Irish identity and language, marriage equality and access to justice for legacy matters.
"As you know these rights are now taken for granted by citizens in other parts of these islands."
Lawyer Niall Murphy, involved in organising the letter, said it was signed by a "cross section of northern nationalist civil society and citizens from throughout Ireland reflecting many professions; business, the arts, sporting, cultural and community life".
It follows a similar appeal to Mr Varadkar made in December of last year.
