Fireworks injuries up says report
Fireworks related injuries in the province have risen significantly despite the introduction of a licensing scheme introduced by the government last year.
The Northern Ireland Fireworks Statistics report published today revealed that with seven more people injured in 2003 than the previous year, the total number of people injured by fireworks over the Halloween period last year rose to 45 - an increase 18% on the 2002 figure. Of those injured four out of five were under 20 years old and the most common site of injury was to the face, head or face.
The report prompted Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety, Angela Smith, to urge the public to take more care when handling fireworks.
The Minister said: "I am disappointed to note that there are still too many injuries from fireworks. Last Halloween 45 people were injured here, with the majority of injuries occurring to young people.
"Most injuries were to the wrist, hand and face, resulting in a great deal of pain and suffering which could have been avoided."
The Minister added: “We must continue to work together to ensure that the right advice and messages are given and to achieve a reduction in the number of injuries this year.”
