Racial Hate Crime More Common Than Sectarian Crime In NI
Last year marked the first time Northern Ireland had more racially motivated hate crimes than sectarian ones, new statistics have revealed.
The figures show that 609 racially motivated hate crimes were recorded in 2017, compared to 576 sectarian hate crimes.
This marks the first time racially motivated crime numbers have surpassed that of sectarian motivated crimes, according to the Good Relations Indicator Report published by The Executive Office.
The statistics also revealed that the number of young people and adults who think relations between Catholics and Protestants have improved over the past five years has plummeted by over 10 percent in the past year.
Dr Jonny Byrne, a senior lecturer in criminology and criminal justice from the Ulster University, has questioned whether the figures represent "the first indicators that the outputs of the peace process are stalling".
"They provide a sobering health-check of the peace process in the absence of politics working," he said.
Dr Byrne also said there is a need to accelerate existing work on the crime rates to "highlight good practice and actively reflect and promote the diversity of our society".
