Man Dies In Accidental Kitchen Fire
The Fire Service has said that a fire at a house in Cookstown in which a 28-year-old man died on Friday morning, 05 October, was an accidental kitchen fire.
A Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) spokeswoman released a statement that offered the organisation's condolences to the man's family and friends.
"We received a call to Queen's Avenue at 2.31am initially to a report of a carbon monoxide alarm sounding in a flat. While in attendance at this incident Firefighters noticed blackened windows in a neighbouring first floor flat," she said.
"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus immediately entered that property and rescued a man from the living room of the flat. Sadly he died at the scene. A fire in the kitchen of the property had burnt itself out."
The statement also confirmed that the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental and urged members of the public to take fire safety measures, including functioning smoke alarms that are tested once a week.
