NI Fire Service Response May Be Delayed By Brexit
Fire service response times may be impacted as a result of Brexit due to currency changes.
An internal report by the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) revealed that fleet management, which currently relies on vehicles imported from the EU, is at risk and may impact it's response times.
Most resources used by the service currently come from the EU and any potential tariffs on imported goods are likely to affect budget management within the NIFRS.
The risk was determined as "critical" in the report and may result in "reduced operational cover" as well as "delays in responding to operational incidents."
The NIFRS said it is also exploring the potential impact on cross-border arrangements.
A "medium" risk level has been discovered regarding the ability of the fire service staff to cross the Irish border in the case of emergencies, with particular concern around the Belleek and Ballyshannon areas.
In a statement, the NIFRS said it is working closely with other agencies, including the Department of health to "identify any potential impacts on service delivery position" as a result of Brexit.
"NIFRS is also engaging with the Republic of Ireland Border Fire Services on any potential impacts the EU exit may have on existing cross-border arrangements," the statement said.
