Bank Of England Governor Meets With NI Business Leaders

The Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has met with senior business leaders during a private event in Belfast.

Mr Carney met with senior leaders from the business community and the voluntary sector during an event at Belfast's new Grand Central Hotel on Thursday, 13 September.

During the event, he heard about business and social issues impacting on Northern Ireland and the work of the Community Foundation in supporting local communities.

Community Foundation Director of Philanthropy, Siofra Healy, said: "Given our vision of a peaceful, shared and socially just society, we were delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Bank of England and welcome Mark Carney to Northern Ireland, and to share with him the significant opportunities and challenges economically and politically here."

Bank Of England Northern Ireland Agent, Frances Hill, said: "Our role in NI is to make sure that the Governor and the Bank of England have a well-rounded view of economic conditions and prospects from across the country. This event was a great opportunity for the Governor to gather first hand the most up-to-date information, views and experiences from Northern Ireland."

Bank Of England Paper £5 Note To Be Withdrawn From Circulation
Bank of England has announced that its paper five pound notes will be withdrawn from circulation on 05 May, 2017. After this date the note will cease to be legal tender, however the Bank of England will continue to accept them, with no time limit applied.

Bank of England cuts lending rate to 4.5%
The Bank of England has reduced the UK interest lending rate to 4.5%. The decision to cut interest rates had been widely expected in an effort to improve GDP growth, encourage consumer speeding and prevent recession in the manufacturing industry. Interest rates had remained at 4.75% since August 2004.

Bank of England holds UK interest rate at 4%
The Bank of England has held the main UK interest rate at 4% for the twelfth consecutive month. This is despite a larger than anticipated cut by the US Federal Reserve. Leading economists were split on whether or not interest rates would or should be dropped.
