NIE warns fliers to stay clear of powerlines
Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) has said that it has written to a number of flying clubs throughout the province to warn amateur pilots to stay clear of overhead powerlines.
NIE issued a warning to anyone taking to the skies to plan their flight carefully and to stay away from overhead powerlines following an incident in Limavady on Saturday afternoon when a single-seat glider hit and damaged a high voltage overhead cable.
Julie Cole, NIE Safety Officer, said the pilot was fortunate not to have been killed: “Luckily in this incident no-one was injured but this could easily have resulted in a fatality. The wing of the glider hit and severed the overhead line – we would warn all parachutists, small aircraft and gliders to take the location of powerlines into account when planning their flying and landing routes.”
She said that NIE had written to parachute and light aircraft clubs to remind them of the dangers of overhead electricity cables.
Around 180 customers in the Myroe and Crindle areas were affected by the damage to the electricity network in Saturday's incident.
Engineers called in to replace the broken overhead line restored power by 7.40pm.
