Employment Rate Declines In NI

Employment has declined in the last quarter in Northern Ireland, according to the latest Labour Force Survey (LFS).

Estimates for the period between May and July 2018 show both the employment rate and the economic inactivity rate decreased to 69.3% and 27.7% respectively. The unemployment rate also decreased to 4.0%.

The proportion of people aged 16 to 64 in work decreased over the quarter (0.3pps) and increased over the year (1.1pps).

Other findings in the Survey include:

• The number of people on the NI claimant count decreased by 100 over the month to 28,000 in August 2018.

• Businesses reported an increase in employee jobs over the quarter and year, to a series high of 765,100 jobs in June 2018.

• During August 2018, 117 redundancies took place, a decrease from July's total (133).

Drop In Unemployment Rate In NI
The number of unemployed people in Northern Ireland has fallen in the three months to January 2018, according to the latest Labour Market survey. The employment rate rose to 69.8%, however it remains below the UK average of 75.3%. The data was published by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA).

Ryanair Launches New Belfast To Malta Route
Ryanair has launched a new Belfast to Malta route. The airline launched the twice-weekly route as part of its Belfast summer 2018 schedule. Its suspended Belfast-London service will be also be reinstated a month early, from 01 March, and will operate to and from London Stansted.

Over 200,000 Waiting More Than Nine Weeks For First Hospital Appointment
As of the end of June 2018, more than 200,000 patients (73.2%) were waiting more than nine weeks for a first consultant-led outpatient appointment, according to the latest quarterly Northern Ireland Waiting Times Statistics. The statistics have been published today by the Department of Health.

10% Of 16 - 24-Year-Olds Not In Education, Employment Or Training
Some 10% of all NI young people, aged 16-24, were not in education, employment or training (NEET) between October and December, 2018, according to the latest statistics. The Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency figures show that 21,000 people, aged 16-24, in Northern Ireland were recorded as NEET in the last quarter of last year.
